The MSK team pulled off a magnificent win for our client on Tuesday, May 31, 2017, as a federal judge ruled that Drake's song "Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2," off the 2013 album Nothing Was the Same, fairly sampled a 1982 spoken-word recording, "Jimmy Smith Rap," and that there is no liability for copyright infringement, noted by The Hollywood Reporter.

I have to down play Boi1da’s production skills a little bit because the portion of the sample that he took was just right there for the taking. 'Pound Cake' / 'Paris Morton Music 2' is a song by Canadian rapper Drake from his third studio album Nothing Was the Same released in 2013. What surprised me is where the sample came from…īut it’s not too shocking especially if you listen closely. The intro to Drakes 'Pound Cake'- the closing track from Nothing Was The Same -featured a very prominent sample from a 1982 Jazz song, 'Jimmy Smith Rap', performed by Jimmy Smith. Drake was sued in 2014 for copyright infringement over a spoken word sample that provides the introduction to his track Pound. It’s like there’s a small dose of grunge injected into the production. Drake is being sued over the sample used at the beginning of 'Pound Cake'. Drake Wins Lawsuit Over 'Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2' Sample. It truly has that Toronto music feel to it. Produced by Boi-1da and Jordan Evans, 'Pound Cake' samples Wu-Tang Clan's 'C.R.E.A.M.' as well as. The tempo was slowed down perhaps and the portion that he took was maybe like an odd bar, meaning that he had to make the loop sound smooth because when you take samples with an odd amount of bars then if you were to just play them back to back you would always hear that pause opposed to if you took a sample with an even amount of bars.Īnother song that I enjoy from Drake’s new album is Pound Cake. The first time we heard Drake's Nothing Was The Same, we knew 'Pound Cake' was something special. You can tell that 40 took the sample from an early part of the song. More time was put into creating a melody from the chopped sample. The drum pattern and bassline are both simple.

I like this production because it’s simple and it still manages to bring the listener closer to the mood that the producer was trying to promote. And the next year she hinted she'd be up for another collaboration with Canadian-native Drake. The first of which comes from Wu Tang Forever which was produced by 40. 'Honestly been trying to play it cool but Drake and Jay Z sampled me on Pound Cake,' she wrote. Two of my favorite songs from Drake’s Nothing Was The Same contains samples that I wanted to listen to just to kind of see how they were flipped by Noah ’40’ Shebib & Boi1da. I’m just in the mood to listen to some samples this morning.
